Toward a Sustainable Future

There is a tempatation to just dwell on the bad news. That is not enough. We must look for and work towards a way out of our dilemma. This section is dedicated to reporting on the solution and those who are working on the solution and creating a path to sustainability.

The path to sustainability has a number of elements. Any authentic path to sustainability must start with a spirituality. Spirituality is at the root basis of human consciousness: it forms our perception of reality and the root source of our morality. An authentic spirituality, must, by necessity include a creation story. The creation story tells us where we came from and who we are. Proceeding directly from that authentic spirituality is a code of ethics, which I label  the "ethos" (Karen Armstrong). And once an authentic sustainable ethos comes about, we can now proceed to constructing and describing a sustainable economics. The present economic system is unsustainable and has created the present Overshoot crisis. Closely related to economics is the process of human governance. How humans govern themselves in a humane and sustainable manner proceeds directly from a sustainable ethics. Closely related to both the sustainable economics and sustainble governance, and product of both is sustainable human culture. And finally, in this present crisis, it is necessary to examine and talk about "resilience". We humans are entering a period of multiple crises caused by the climate change  and destructive human behavior. The path to sustainability must, by necessity, include considerations to create and enhance resilience in our infrastructure, economics, food supplies, healthcare, housing, etc. This resilience also includes enhancing our human social resilience.

The Age of Sustainable Development

Jeffrey D. Sachs. Foreword by Ban Ki-moon

Columbia University Press

Jeffrey D. Sachs is one of the world's most perceptive and original analysts of global development. In this major new work he presents a compelling and practical framework for how global citizens can use a holistic way forward to address the seemingly intractable worldwide problems of persistent extreme poverty, environmental degradation, and political-economic injustice: sustainable development.
